Pushing Daisies: Secrets and Pies

Something strange happened on ABC’s Pushing Daisies this week. I’m not talking about the guy who was dating a doll or the traveling nontraditional remedy salesman. The mystery of the week usually takes the entire episode to investigate, but last night it was solved by 9:15.
Tony DiNapoli was not in fact killed by his friggin’ awesome girlfriend, Tina Arangino. It was Burly Bruce Carter, via his life-sized doll girlfriend named Sheila. I’ll come back to Bruce and Sheila later.
So what was left to happen? Plenty, it turns out. Creator Bryan Fuller and writer Abby Gewanter showed the audience that they can shake up the formula (solve the mystery, explore Ned and Chuck’s relationship, watch Olive pine) and still preserve the show’s tone and style.
After Tina is released and Burly Bruce is put behind bars where he belongs, we are introduced to Billy and Dilly Balsam, the brother and sister team behind Balsam’s Bittersweets Taffy and Sweets Emporium that just opened up across the street from The Pie Hole. Chuck accidentally steals some customers from Bittersweets, which ignites Dilly’s (a wonderfully smug Molly Shannon) revenge streak. She tips off a health inspector to go surprise The Pie Hole. He doesn’t take too well to the room full of dead fruit that Ned revives to put in the pies, so he shuts the place down.
Ned doesn’t want to fight back, so Olive and Chuck take things into their own hands. Later that night, they go to Bittersweets and let loose a whole bunch of rats. Ned finds out and goes back to re-capture all the rats and finds a little something extra in the taffy vat–Billy Balsam. Someone killed him, and that someone only has nine fingers, because one is in Billy’s belly. Ned is in jail for being caught by cops at the scene of the crime, so Emerson and Chuck have to solve this one on their own.
Suspect number one is Dilly, who, despite being a little crazy, didn’t kill her own brother. Molly Shannon and Kristin Chenoweth had some great exchanges, including the perfectly timed, “What? It’s an empty car trunk” – “No it’s not.”
With a little flour and a big Fruit Roll-Up, Emerson and Chuck determine that Ned is off the hook (due to the amount of time it takes gastric acids to dissolve fingerprints off chunks of finger) and the murderer is… the health inspector, Andrew Brown. He’s on the run, but at the end of the episode, we see a four-fingered hand slowly descend into a body of water as Dilly looks on with her wheelbarrow.
In the romance department this week, Olive continued pining for Ned and ignoring the advances of Alfredo the alternative remedy salesman. And some advances they were! If anyone ever tells me this:
“If I loved you… then I would love you any way I could. And if we could not touch then I would draw strength from your beauty and if I went blind then I would fill my soul with the sound of your voice and the contents of your thoughts until the last spark of my love for you lit the shabby darkness of my dying mind.”
… I’ll have a lot more to say to him than, “Eh, forget it.” Thankfully, by the end of the episode, Olive realized she should take what she can get, but Alfredo was nowhere to be found.
Pushing Daisies’ super couple (they need a Brangelina name – Nuck? Ched?) hit a small snag this week, with Ned being in jail and all. Ned had been wrestling with whether to tell Chuck that he accidentally killed her father, and after spending some time in a prison cell with Burly Bruce learning about truth, finally spit it out.
I’m not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing. I think–not necessarily in life, but in TV –that it’s more interesting when characters share their secrets. It’s fun to watch things unravel and see people’s reactions than to watch one person squirm forever, so I’m definitely excited to see how it all unfolds.
The scenes from next time (in two weeks) show us that Chuck doesn’t take the information too well, but everyone’s favorite olfactory scientist, Oscar Vibenius, is there to pick up the pieces.

Narrator: “Happiness borne of passion is short-lived.”
Olive: “From the Pie Hole, across the street. As in, shut your, but one sweet whiff and people usually want to open theirs.” (Will that fit on a t-shirt?)
Ned: “Pie is home; people always come home.”
Dilly: “What I see, I want. What I want, I get. Nothing scares me.”
Emerson: “An attractive man who makes pies for a living shouldn’t even spend a short time in prison.”
Narrator: “Then he considered how being locked in a prison was actually much worse than some silly metaphor about truth.”
Emerson: “Yeah, that would narrow our list of suspects down to insanely stupid people.”
Ned: “Go lying! Or at least: yay to not telling the truth.”
