This week on Heroes, we got to see what happened while the show was on hiatus this summer. No, it wasn’t Milo and Hayden hittin’ the town; it was what went down between last season’s finale and this season’s premiere.
I was psyched to find out what happened when Peter and Nathan Petrelli flew away and under what circumstances Peter got his haircut. We did learn those things, but it wasn’t exactly mind-blowing. Here’s what each character did on his or her summer vacation this year:
Peter and Nathan
He saved the cheerleader, so they saved the world. Nathan flew Peter up into the stratosphere and Peter finally explained what a bunch of people were complaining about last year: Why didn’t Peter just fly up there by himself? Because it was taking all his strength not to blow up, that’s why (exactly what I said!). Peter dropped Nathan, exploded, healed and then flew back down to catch him before he fell in the East River. He was also able to bring him to a hospital and turn invisible to escape a cop who was after him. Anybody else miss the days when Peter had mastered his powers?
In the hospital, Peter gets zapped from behind by Elle, who is accompanied by Bob, and the next thing he knows, he wakes up in the Company.
Peter, Elle and Adam
After Bob guilt-trips him with the whole “You’ll never put your family in danger again,” Peter agrees to start taking drugs and hang around until the virus is developed to cure him. He’s assigned a room next to his new best friend, Adam Monroe. Adam has been at the Company for thirty years because he tried to take his abilities public–with his regenerative powers, a small amount of his blood could cure almost anybody. The Company didn’t like the sound of that, so he’s been locked up ever since.
“Hi, I’m Elle, I’m 24 and I’m looking for a guy with whom I have sparks!” Even though Elle’s been at the Company for two-thirds of her life, she sure knows how to flirt and she seems to have an itch she wants Peter to scratch. They form a weird sort of S&M relationship where he lets her shock him when she delivers his drugs.
It doesn’t take long before Peter regains control over his abilities and he and Adam plot an escape, using the old pills-under-the-tongue trick. Peter phases through his wall, then phases the two of them out of the building. Cleanest prison break ever. Guess where they’re headed?
Nathan, Heidi and Angela
Nathan is looking a little worse for the wear after being so close to a nuclear blast, and is in the hospital with some serious third-degree burns all over his body. As gross as he looked, these scenes were really powerful. Angela gets Heidi to believe that there is a “dark secret in the Petrelli family… delusions of grandeur, paranoia” that led to both Mr. Petrelli’s suicide and Nathan’s current story about flying and exploding. Angela wants her to go with a car crash cover and not tell anyone about Nathan’s apparent mental lapse.
Later on, Peter and Adam sneak into the hospital and give Nathan some of Adam’s blood. He starts healing on the spot, but Peter can’t stay long. Up on the roof of the hospital, Elle and the Haitian catch up to them, but not before Adam gives Peter an address in Montreal where they can meet up later. Elle goes after Adam, and the Haitian chases Peter into a storage facility and handcuffs him inside a unit. Peter is naturally confused, and the Haitian says Angela helped him, so he’s helping Peter. Peter’s secret is safe with him, and with that, he wipes his memory and sends him off to Ireland.
Niki, DL and Micah
Turns out DL survived after being shot by Linderman, but we know in the present day he’s dead, so I was nervous for him throughout this episode. Bob caught up with Niki at the hospital and kindly paid DL’s hospital bills, but not without a catch: She should come spend some time at the Company to get rid of Jessica.
But Niki learned how to control Jessica, right? Not so fast. Bob tells her that her way of dealing with her power was to cause a fracture, resulting in another personality…and just because she has Jessica under control doesn’t mean another personality won’t pop up.
Niki agrees to try taking drugs at home because she doesn’t want to leave her family.
I really like Micah’s plan. He wants to listen to the police scanner to find out where the action is, then have DL and Niki roll in to save the day. They’d be like the Fantastic Four, minus one. He’s really into this hero thing, but Niki isn’t because her meds are rendering her cold and detached. She changes her mind again and pours the pills down the drain.
Later on, Niki’s getting ready for her first day selling cars and it seems Jessica makes a return. It’s not Jessica though; it’s Gina, from when Niki moved to LA and told everyone to call her that. Gina pulls Niki into the mirror and heads off, leaving DL a note written in lipstick on the mirror–the oh-so-juvenile “Gone to LA C-Ya!”
DL sees the note after he, as a rookie firefighter, runs into a burning building to save a child, and it’s all over the news.
DL finds Niki/Gina at a club in LA getting hit on by a particularly slimy-looking guy. DL snaps Niki back to reality, punches the dude and starts to bring his wife home. They are met on the stairs by slimy guy, who shoots and kills DL. I knew DL had to die at some point in the episode, but that was definitely unexpected. At DL’s funeral, we see Micah’s cousins and grandma from New Orleans, and also Bob. He and Niki share a look and we know what happens next.
Maya and Alejandro
As confusing as it is to have these new characters in the mix, I still love it when Maya kills people. It’s just so creepy. This week, we got to see how Maya and Alejandro discovered their powers. Alejandro was about to marry a cheating skank, which didn’t make Maya very happy. When she discovered the cheating skank doing what she does best, Maya cried her black tears for the first time and killed not only the bride and her “partner” but everyone else at the wedding reception–except Alejandro.
Maya gets herself to a nunnery so she can’t kill any more people (word on the street was she poisoned everyone at the wedding). Alejandro and a cop pay her a visit, so Maya gets worked up, and this time Alejandro holds her hands, tells her to calm down and sucks the tears back in. Aaaaand…they’re off!
The Present Day
This episode was framed with Peter and Adam in Montreal trying to heal Peter’s mind. Regeneration works not only for wrinkles and gray hairs (Adam did tell Peter he was 400 years old), but for lost memories too, and Peter winds up remembering everything. Adam ends the episode with, “Good then, shall we save the world?” They only have three episodes left in this arc (as the previews tell us), so they’d better get cracking.
