Good Advertising, Strong Communities and Bob Dylan - SAY Media
By: Say Media   (12/26/2012)

Online publishing, for all the technology it relies on, has been unusually slow to innovate when it comes to advertising. But, like Dylan said, the times they are a-changing. After years of being locked into publishing platforms that could only cope with Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) standards, new technology means publishers are starting to explore new formats. It's not been an easy ride. Developments like click-word models were very difficult to sell to publishers who faced vehement opposition from editorial staff. But if we go for another Bob reference, you'veGotta Serve Somebody nicely encapsulates the feeling that advertising serves advertisers and viewers, not editors.

Best Tablets for Kids - Shelly Palmer
By: Shelly Palmer   (12/21/2012)

If you're scrambling for last minute gift ideas, you've surely struggled with the idea of getting an iPad or an Android tablet for your kid. The two-year old and four-year-old in my life are iPad monsters. The four-year-old thinks my mother is an "app." The actual app is Facetime, but she's four! To the two-year-old (who is just learning to put words together) "app" is already in her vocabulary. It won't be long until each and every one of us has a tablet of our very own. Whether for work, school or fun, tablets are able to make many things in our daily lives easier and help keep us connected.

The Big Tech Trends of 2013 - SAY Media
By: Say Media   (12/20/2012)

Predicting the future is a sucker's game. No matter how smart you think you are, events have a way of overtaking logic and making predictions not just wrong but completely beside the point. That's why we have smartphones instead of jetpacks.

The New Spirituality: Transforming Holiday Economics
By: Jack Myers   (12/19/2012)

But... the first generation to grow up with the Internet, born post-1991 and now in college and entering the workforce, considers the holiday season to be an abstraction, a time for commercial excess far removed from any direct and causal relationship with the soul enrichment they seek.

Lessons From a Dark and Stormy Night - Don Seaman-TVB
By: Don Seaman   (12/19/2012)

Somewhere in the suburbs of northern New Jersey, a phone rings. The caller is bearing news: "I just heard that there's a station open. I'll text you where you need to go." It doesn't matter that it's 9PM. You have to take your opportunity when you can. So you run out the door to get in line and hope that they don't run out before it's your turn.

Ad Council joins Initiative Media in Hurricane Sandy Relief Efforts - Laurie Keith
By: Laurie keith   (12/18/2012)

Like many New Yorkers, I was affected by Hurricane Sandy when the surge hit on 10/29/2012. I live in the Lower East Side of Manhattan and lost power and heat for 5 days. My neighborhood was a ghost town – there were no lights, few people and everything was shut down. Upper Manhattan WAS not impacted by the storm – electricity was running, heat was on, and restaurants were open. Thankfully, my friend's parents live on the Upper West Side and they graciously took me in the night after the storm. I was feeling emotional and displaced when I arrived. This was the first I saw the news coverage on TV and I couldn't believe it. I knew it was going to be a bad storm but I had no idea the damage would be as horrific as it was.

Religion: How the Internet is Transforming Holiday Economics
By: Jack Myers   (12/17/2012)

The first generation to grow up with the Internet, born post-1991 and now in college and entering the workforce, regards the holiday season as an abstraction, a time for commercial excess far removed from any direct and causal relationship with soul enrichment. This Hooked Up generation of Internet Natives is recasting the commercial foundation of the holiday season. They are returning it to its roots as a time to encourage peaceful coexistence; they're going online to experience the warmth of home and hearth through online communities that are focused on improving the lives of others; and they're reflecting on spiritual connectivity and purpose. Internet Natives are far less enthusiastic about spending their hard-earned money in response to high-pressure marketing campaigns and are less impressed with the "hottest," "latest" or "newest."

Taking It To The Crowd - Simon Applebaum
By: Simon Applebaum   (12/17/2012)

If you're a program producer, you've never had more options to get the program you want to do on the air. There's broadcast and cable networks, digital subcarrier channels running on both broadcast and cable, video-on-demand, 3D networks, syndication, and online video services which, thanks to smart TVs, more people appear to be catching on those TVs than on their computers.

DISH's intentions related to wireless are becoming clearer with its deal with regional wireless carrier nTelos to test a 50Mbps fixed wireless broadband service. DISH could use its spectrum along with that from CLWR (if successful in their acquisition bid) to develop a viable broadband platform. This would help DISH to remain competitive with other MVPDs that increasingly offer broadband packages that enable advanced services such as VOD, home monitoring, cloud storage, etc. This is in line with our belief that DISH will try to transition towards IPTV using its wireless infrastructure.

In this column I address the third major consumer economic trend, moving from an ownership to a rental society. As with the prior two, this trend will first be prevalent primarily in the developed world and then spread globally in a decade or so.
