ANA should stay out of Yahoo, Google Antitrust Subject - Gene DeWitt - MediaBizBlogger

So Yahoo! is trying to optimize its business rather than be swallowed up by Microsoft.

They're doing this by seeking to work together with Google to generate hundreds of millions of dollars for Yahoo! and its shareholders.

But the ANA says this is not in the interest of advertisers and urges the Justice Department to look into the antitrust aspects of this matter. Yet one likely result of the government forbidding Yahoo! and Google to work together is a weakened Yahoo! forced into a takeover by Microsoft.

This will help advertisers? Free enterprise?

Yahoo is increasing its value, which in turn will bring a higher multiple! Yahoo never said it doesn't want to be bought out, it just wants a share price that is in line with what they believe is the potential value of the share! By not only increasing their income potential, but also creating the threat of a competitive edge for Google against Microsoft, this will certainly double their value to Microsoft. If you want to market yourself, you have to cover all the needs of your suiter!

Combined, Google and Yahoo would control ~90% of searches.

As publicly-held companies, Yahoo's board would likely soon conclude that it's best to stop investing more $$ into their own search functionality. Why not simply leverage Google's investment and take profit from Yahoo's traffic?

Similarly, Google would likely soon conclude that the more Google ads they can run on Yahoo, the more money Google makes.

Media monopolies do not benefit advertisers. And computer monocultures do not benefit innovation.
