Regular readers of my columns already know that I consider the annual CMT Music Awards in Nashville to be the best awards show on television. I have been a huge fan of this event since the first time I covered it in 2005.
It seems I am not alone in my appreciation of CMT's efforts – nor the opportunity to mix and mingle for several days in Music City with the growing number of celebrities who flock to this event. I'll have much more to say about the overall experience in tomorrow's JackMyers Media Business Report, but for now I have to note that in four years of covering the CMT Awards I have never seen so many stars from so many arenas converge on the carpet (purple this year) at the Curb Event Center at Belmont University or at the after-party. For that matter, I have never seen so many artists from country's A-list turn out to perform in the same year. They included Kenny Chesney, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Keith Urban, Toby Keith, Alan Jackson, Sugarland, Brad Paisley, Rascal Flatts, Brooks & Dunn, Hank Williams Jr., LeAnn Rimes, Carrie Underwood and newly minted A-lister, 18-year-old Taylor Swift.
Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman made her first-ever visit to the Awards on the arm of her superstar husband, Keith Urban. American Idol judge Paula Abdul flew in for the day, simply to make a brief appearance on the show. (She was staying at my hotel, the Loew's Vanderbilt, and I saw her exiting the lobby at 6:15 yesterday morning. I have to admit I was impressed at how awake and alert she appeared on American Idol last night after her cross-country trip.) Tim Daly was on hand to participate in the show (and to generate some publicity for his strike-interrupted ABC series Private Practice.) Snoop Dogg was there, too. So were Olympic gold-medalist Scott Hamilton (a Nashville-area resident), actor Christian Kane (soon to be seen in the new TNT action-drama Leverage), Nashville Star Season 4 winner Chris Young and a number of players from the Tennessee Titans.

And, of course, at the center of it all was one of the biggest stars in the media universe, Nashville-area native Miley Cyrus, on hand to co-host the Awards with dad Billy Ray.
Once again, the Awards were further energized by the Idols. There is simply no better place to see former American Idol favorites than at the CMT Music Awards. The show has proven to be very, very good for country music.
Season 4 winner Carrie Underwood has sung on the Awards before, but her performance Monday night of her smash single All-American Girl was the grand finale of the show. (I attended Carrie's rehearsal on Sunday and came away even more impressed by her. In addition to her extraordinary vocal talent, she was also able to descend a staircase in sky-high heels without anyone or anything to hold on to while she sang. She made it look effortless. She also chewed gum while singing. I sat there worrying that she might choke while holding long power-notes. It was later explained to me that singers often chew gum while performing to control saliva flow. Who knew?)
Season 5 finalist Bucky Covington, who attended last year as a guest, was a nominee (for Breakthrough Video of the Year) and also performed on the Side Stage, where up-and-comers played leading into commercial breaks.

Season 3 runner-up Diana DeGarmo, a sweet sensation on the recent CMT competition series Gone Country, was a presenter (along with Gone co-stars Maureen McCormick, Bobby Brown and Sisqo). We talked at the pre-Awards party Sunday night. Like so many previous Idol competitors, DeGarmo lives in the Nashville area and is pursuing a career in country music.

Season 6 finalist Phil Stacey walked the purple carpet and talked about his self-titled new album, Phil Stacey. I am certain he will follow in Covington's footsteps and perform on next year's show.

In addition to Abdul's brief in-person appearance, Idol was also represented by host Ryan Seacrest in the hilarious taped segment that opened the show. And while multiple-nominee Underwood went home empty-handed (after a year during which she has won every award in the industry), Season 5 favorite Kellie Pickler nabbed three of the coveted Buckles (as CMT's awards are known). Sadly, Kellie was performing in Scottsdale, Arizona, and unable to attend, but she accepted the award for Breakthrough Video of the Year (for I Wonder) via satellite. In 2007 the bubbly Pickler lit up the carpet (orange that year) and charmed the crowd as a presenter. Surely she will be on hand to perform at next year's event.
Television's other top reality show, Dancing With the Stars, was also represented Monday night by two-time champion dancer Julianne Hough. As delightful and down to earth as Underwood, DeGarmo and Pickler, Hough – whose celebrity partner Adam Carolla was eliminated last week – told me she'll make return visits to the show this season when she's asked, but she intends to use this time to focus on her new career as a country singer. Her self-titled album debuts May 20 and she'll be on tour this summer with Brad Paisley.

Finally, only in Nashville can one have the experience I had Sunday night after the CMT pre-Awards party, where the about-to-be-huge country group Lady Antebellum performed. I was sitting in the lobby of the Loew's Vanderbilt hotel with two pals around midnight when our new best friend Maureen McCormick appeared. (She was working the weekend as a correspondent for Access Hollywood.) We had talked with her several times that day, and she asked us to accompany her and her Gone Country co-star Bobby Brown on a late-night run to the legendary Nashville club Tootsie's. We politely declined, not wanting to awaken the next morning with a honky tonk hangover. But I could hear my childhood self cursing deep inside me as I turned down an invitation to party with Marcia Brady.
